Self-Directed Support has been growing around the world for over 60 years. Again and again the evidence shows that self-directed support not only improves people's lives it is also sustainable and encourages active citizenship and stronger communities. There are several million disabled people around the world already in control of their support.
But change is hard. There continues to be significant fear and resistance. Even where there are developments these are often patchy and partial. One group may get the chance to self-direct, while another is excluded. One place may make significant progress, but others lag behind. People with physical disabilities are often the first to benefit but the benefits are rarely extended to other groups.
The SDS Network was created by Citizen Network, with support from many different allies, to connect all those people who want to see self-directed support grow so that many more people can benefit from the chance to control their own support and be treated as full citizens.
