The Self-Direction Center is a national nonprofit organization strengthening self-direction across disability and aging programs.
We center the perspectives of people with lived experience self-directing, while engaging stakeholders across systems to collectively support and protect self-direction.
Our work connects four pillars:
Community — Weaving together the many threads of self-direction through peer networks, advocate convenings, and connection spaces across roles and states
Education — Sharing knowledge in plain language and making self-direction understandable to everyone—from new participants to policymakers—through webinars, resources, and lived-experience stories. We also host the annual National Self-Direction Conference.
Research — Acting as a bridge between data and action by connecting researchers with the community and translating findings into advocacy-ready tools
Advocacy — Connecting grassroots advocacy with national influence, centering the voices of people who self-direct while building shared power across states
